Robinson Retrospective Opens at National Gallery of Australia

The first major retrospective of the work of William Robinson opens at the National Gallery of Australia on 14 December 2001.

Dr Brian Kennedy, Director of the National Gallery of Australia, said that the Gallery is delighted to show this major retrospective of one of Australia's most significant artists.

'William Robinson has given us a highly distinctive way of thinking about a sense of place, particularly in relation to the lush rainforest of south-east Queensland that he has come to know over many years. In his mature work he transports the viewer on journeys of discovery through his unique way of conveying multiple viewpoints and timeframes in his work.'

The exhibition, organised by the Queensland Art Gallery, brings together for the first time over eighty important works from public, private and corporate collections in Australia and New Zealand and traces the major shifts in Robinson's painting over the last three decades.

In the 1980s, Robinson established a technique of painting all encompassing panoramas of land, trees, and sky, where there is no fixed horizon or single perspective. This method, combined with the monumental scale of many of his major works, conveys both the immensity and the minute detail of the universe.

Robinson's landscapes are inextricably linked to his experience of the local environments in which he has lived. 'I did not paint these works as a visitor to the landscape but as one who lived in it and experienced it every day,' Robinson said.

Queensland Art Gallery Director, Doug Hall, said he was delighted for this exhibition to be displayed at Australia's National Gallery. 'This is one of the largest single artist retrospectives the Queensland Art Gallery has ever mounted. It comes at a time in Robinson's career when his work has assumed its rightful place within Australia's distinguished landscape painting tradition'.

A full colour publication Darkness and Light: The Art of William Robinson has been produced in association with the exhibition. The publication will be available through the Gallery Shop.

William Robinson: A Retrospective will be on display from 14 December 2001 - 10 March 2002.
