2–4 April 2004

Media Release
25 March 2004

Leading Australian artists, printers, curators and art historians will gather at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra for the Fifth Australian Print Symposium in April.

The Symposium is the pre-eminent forum for Australasian printmaking and provides an opportunity for colleagues to meet both formally and informally during the Symposium and the many associated events. Representatives from various print workshops in Australia and overseas will present papers. The National Gallery of Australia has hosted the triennial symposia since 1989, with the generous support of the Gordon Darling Australasian Print Fund.

Symposium convenor, National Gallery of Australia Senior Curator Roger Butler says: 'We will focus on the importance of place in the creation of printed works. The Symposium will also look at places where prints are made in regional Australia and remote communities; or working alone at home, on the kitchen table or in the garage; and the rise of stencil art, often produced on public walls.'

Keynote speaker is Banduk Marika, a senior Yolngu woman from Yirrkala, and former council member of the National Gallery of Australia, was honoured with the Australia Council’s Red Ochre Award in 2001 for her outstanding contribution to Indigenous art and culture. Her linocuts are in major collections both Australia and overseas. She will talk about cultural responsibilities past and present.

Other guest speakers include curator and art historian Chaitanya Sambrani, who will discuss contemporary printmaking in India. PNG painter and printmaker Daniel Waswas, who has recently established GalleryPNG in Boroko, will discuss contemporary printmaking in PNG. Ruth Burgess will take us on a journey to learn from the Chinese. Brent Harris will share his experiences of learning Japanese printmaking techniques. Russell Craig will speak on collaborations in Vietnam and Dimity Philips will focus on women printmakers in regional Australia.

To coincide with the 5th Australian Print Symposium local galleries throughout Canberra are hosting print exhibitions.
