Media release

6th November 2004

The National Gallery of Australia wishes to advise a change to the formalities accompanying the launch of Vivienne Westwood — 34 years in fashion.

The Gallery was advised by Ms Westwood overnight that she will be unable to travel to Canberra to participate in the opening celebrations for the exhibition, due to the serious illness of a close friend. Ms Westwood says that:

'she regrets this circumstance as she was eagerly looking forward to attending the opening of the exhibition in Canberra, and hopes to have the opportunity to reschedule her visit at some stage during the exhibition season'.

The Gallery has extended Ms Westwood their thoughts and warm wishes at this sad time for her and her family. A Gallery spokesperson said that while the situation was regrettable, the Gallery fully understood Ms Westwood’s decision.

While the gala opening of the exhibition is proceeding as planned, the Gallery will contact all people who have paid for any event in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition and will offer a full refund. The celebrity interview with Ms Westwood planned for Saturday 13 November has been cancelled. The Gallery wishes to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause patrons.

Vivienne Westwood — 34 years in fashion is the first major retrospective of the work of Vivienne Westwood, one of Britain’s most innovative, admire and influential fashion designers. The exhibition will be showing at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra from 12th November 2004 until 30th January 2005.
