Author Peter Carey was a special guest for the Gallery's 19th Birthday celebrations on 6 October 2001.

Peter Carey has been fascinated by Sidney Nolan's Kelly Series 1945-47 since he first saw them in the early 1960s. In his birthday lecture Carey addressed the development of Australian cultural life during the 1930s and 40s.

Peter Carey lives in New York and lectures in creative writing at New York University. Carey's latest book True History of the Kelly Gang has sold over 100,000 copies in Australia and was awarded the 2000 Commonwealth Writers Prize and the 2001 Booker Prize.
