Road Closures
17 December 2007

Road Closure Facts | Parking Map (pdf) | Plan of changes (pdf)

Civil engineering works associated with road safety improvements and major extensions to the National Gallery of Australia will cause temporary road closures and traffic changes from Monday 7 January until 14 March 2008.

Details of the new traffic arrangements were released today (Monday 17 December) by Gallery Deputy Director Mr Alan Froud.
He advised motorists that the following roads will be closed for that period:

The road closures will enable the upgrading of stormwater services on King Edward Terrace, the construction of a new Gallery access off Bowen Drive and the creation of a roundabout at the intersection of King Edward Terrace and Bowen Drive to improve road safety.

Due for completion by 2009, the Gallery’s $93 million construction program will improve arrival and entry facilities, create new Australian Indigenous art galleries and provide the first increase in collection display space since the building was opened more than 25 years ago.

Mr Froud said the Gallery and the National Capital Authority were working closely together to coordinate road closures and to minimise inconvenience.  Kerbside signs advising of relevant road closures and traffic detours will be positioned strategically to assist motorists.  More detailed information will be available on both organisations’ websites.

Under the new temporary traffic arrangements motorists heading north on Kings Avenue should detour via King George Terrace.  Those heading south on Kings Avenue should use King George Terrace and motorists travelling from Fyshwick and Kingston on Wentworth Avenue toward Civic should detour via Brisbane Avenue and State Circle.    Bowen Drive will continue to provide access to Kings Avenue for motorists travelling from Kingston towards Russell.

Motorists wanting to access the Gallery and the High Court of Australia should use Parkes Place off King Edward Terrace.   In order to minimise inconvenience to visitors, the Gallery will delay opening its underground car park until 10am.  Overflow parking will be accommodated in the car park opposite Questacon.

To assist visitor parking, Gallery staff have been encouraged to car-pool, take a bus or ride to work.  The Gallery will remain open throughout the construction program.   “Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience and assist smooth traffic flows during construction of the new roundabout and Gallery extensions,” Mr Froud said.
