Sculpture Garden Sunday

10.30am -1.30pm, 4 March 2007
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra

By the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, the National Gallery of Australia’s Sculpture Garden comes alive this weekend with a program of free drop-in creative art workshops for children. Sculpture Garden Sunday encourages visitors to look at, think about and make art, with workshops held for various age groups, particularly children aged 12 years and under.

Throughout the morning children and their families can enjoy drawing, funky junk sculpture and clay workshops facilitated by Gallery educators, artists and voluntary guides. A highlight of Sculpture Garden Sunday is a unique opportunity for visitors to work with local artists including Simon Scheuerle, Jennifer Jones, Phil Nizette, and Tony Steele to create an installation piece.

Other activities include a Sculpture Garden children’s trail which enables families to explore the sculptures in the garden and Ickle Pickle Productions will engage audiences with a theatrical response to the outdoor collection during the morning. Gallery conservators will also conduct workshops to share some of their secrets about how the Gallery cares for its outdoor sculptures.

In the afternoon visitors can relax and enjoy lunch under the trees and listen to local band The Cashews as well as various performances by children’s musical groups. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch or make the most of the coffee cart and sausage sizzle.

For their own safety, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Sculpture Garden Sunday will be cancelled in the event of bad weather conditions. For the complete Sculpture Garden Sunday program visit: nga.gov.au/Education/sgs07.cfm
