Created in the palace in Jogjakarta (Yogyakarta), this manuscript is written in Javanese rather than Arabic script. It relates a story from the long romance, Serat Menak, which originated in Persia (Iran) and describes the adventures of Amir Hamzah, the Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, as he travelled from country to country spreading the word of Islam. The text is enclosed within finely painted borders of scrolling foliage and flowers resting on extraordinary crowned naga serpents with human faces.
