Children are often forgotten and neglected as commentators in the larger world but their pictures are a poignant reminder that they are observant and involved members of society. Like all artists, children reveal their personal and cultural identity through their drawings and paintings – the great diversity of human experience is contained within their graphic representations. In Childhoods Past, we see a range of urban and rural activity, including everyday events such as waiting for the mail, preparing a meal, going to school, hunting and mustering.
