The subject of this painting comes from the Book of Exodus where Miriam is described hiding her brother Moses in the bulrushes by the Nile to avoid being slaughtered by the Egyptian Pharaoh. Dowling’s image depicts Miriam preparing to take away the child to ensure his survival.
