Breakfasting out records an early London street scene. It shows a varied group of characters, including a journeyman, a cleaner, a flower-seller, a coffee-vendor and her friend, a predatory ‘toff’ ‘eyeing off’ a milliner carrying a hat box. It was Dowling’s first Royal Academy success.
