In The lesson Fox depicted a room filled with sunlight. He showed the mother and child sharing a moment of warmth and intimacy, their figures blended. The French doors are open, allowing access to the outside world. George Clausen shared Fox’s interest in portraying an interior through atmospheric light, as in his Twilight: Interior.
