Ramsay painted a large number of self-portraits. In this work he depicted himself in his shared studio in the act of painting. Behind him is the hired piano which he and the artist JS MacDonald played to entertain friends such as Rupert Bunny, George Lambert and Max Meldrum. The room, which their friend Amy Lambert described as being unsanitary, served as the artists’ studio, sitting room, bedroom and kitchen.
