In the early 1900s Henry Tonks painted poetic images of beautiful and elegant women in wistful reverie. His success depicting such images led the critic CH Collins Baker to praise his ability to convey the inner tensions and humanity of his subjects, and the way ‘the implication of their complexities and mysteries’ made them beautiful.  (The Studio, vol. 49, 1910)
