Mildura Arts Centre, Senator R.D. Elliott Bequest, presented to the city of Mildura by Mrs Hilda Elliott in 1956

During the first ten years of his working life, Orpen portrayed his nudes in daringly frank poses, while at the same time conveying the humanity of his subjects. Orpen never exhibited or sold The English nude during his lifetime, possibly because he thought it too forthright in its sensuality. He may also have wanted to keep this painting because of his attachment to the model, Emily, to whom he had been engaged.
