St Catherine was intended to be one of the 12 saints adorning one of the most elaborate of all English royal tombs, the Tomb of the Duke of Clarence. Commissioned in 1892 by King Edward and Queen Alexandra for their first son Prince Albert Victor, Gilbert was instructed to create a work worthy for a young man who, if he had lived, would have been King. St Catherine was, however, not included in the finished tomb.
