In After the bath Tonks created a modern-day Madonna and Child in an everyday setting. Tonks replaced the traditional shepherd with a young girl presenting a toy sheep to the baby. The central mother figure in this painting has a similar strength and presence to the female archetypes of Tonk’s former student Augustus John in works such as The family group.
