Agnes Goodsir depicted a French housekeeper standing in a room and looking directly out of the picture with comfortable self-assurance. The housekeeper’s broom, dustpan, apron and head-scarf indicate her role. Yet, in depicting the housekeeper in a pose of the upper class, Goodsir ennobled her subject.
