Between 1903 and 1912, equipped with a small notebook, Gore spent every Monday and Thursday night at the Alhambra Theatre, where he made sketches of the stage and orchestra pit, always from the same seat. In ‘The mad Pierrot’ ballet at the Alhambra he created a dynamic image by dividing the painting into three triangular areas, with the line of footlights cutting diagonally across the image, counterpoised by the diagonals of the dancers’ arms and the sheets of music.
