The model for this work was Philpot’s sister, Daisy. When young, she had saved up her allowance to buy paints for Philpot, and she remained his devoted friend, secretary and housekeeper throughout his life. When it was first exhibited Girl at her toilet was noted for its similarity in composition to Sargent’s painting Madame X 1884 (Museum of Modern Art, New York).
