‘In his ongoing experiments at the University of Montreal, on how man reacts to and deals with stress in his everyday life, Dr Selye continues his monumental contribution to experimental medicine.’ (Karsh)

Hans Selye was educated in Prague, Paris and Rome before moving to Montreal, Canada. He became the first director of the University of Montreal’s Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery in 1945. After retiring from the university in 1976, he founded the International Institute of Stress in 1977. His pioneering work showed how environmental stress and anxiety release hormones that could, in time, lead to disorders characteristic of the twentieth century. His theories had a major effect upon modern medicine. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
