Apollo 11 was the first mission in which humans walked on the moon and returned to earth. Apollo 11 was launched on 16 July 1969. On 20 July 1969 two astronauts, Neil Armstrong and ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, landed in Mare Tranquilitatis (the Sea of Tranquility) on the moon in the Lunar Module. Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. Buzz Aldrin had walked in space for 5 hours and 37 minutes during the 1966 Gemini 12 mission and was the second person to set foot on the moon. Michael Collins, the third crewmember on Apollo 11, stayed in orbit around the moon. During their stay on the moon, the astronauts set up scientific experiments, took photographs and collected lunar samples.
