My work is linked to my environment, the places where I collect and make my work provide me with a great variety of materials and thoughts. I have been working in a rural studio in central Victoria with hollow bone and empty gut. My intention was to make vessels which would pass fluids; fix the drought, soothe the dry and tearless, and nourish the thirsty. I have been happily absorbed in the basic mechanics of flow (some goes in, some comes out). My sculptures start on the inside so ‘the plumbing’, like most aspects of their construction, becomes layered and concealed until a resolved surface is eventually achieved.
When a big northerly blows in off the desert there is not much to it other than heat and dirt and weirdness. Outside my studio I could see my linen on the line getting whipped up and dragged through the dry red earth. Torn to shreds, I brought it in, bound, tied and secured it to my work. Aquamanile: Cow has been made waterproof and has a slow flow from her eyes to her udder when used as an aquamanile.
