This work is from a series of portraits Lautrec completed for the 1891 Société des artistes indépendants exhibition. The subject, Gaston Bonnefoy, was a family friend. Suave, well-travelled and debonair, Lautrec depicts Bonnefoy as a man about town. Elegant in a casual overcoat and jaunty melon hat, his wild side is suggested by the phallic positioning of the cane he holds at his waist. The slender format of the portrait reflects the oban shape of the Japanese ukiyo-e prints that Lautrec admired.
