This portfolio of popular Parisian actors and actresses was created in 1898. Originally each print was intended to be accompanied by a short biography. This never eventuated, although seven gossip-laden texts were completed before the project stalled.

The performers were famous figures in fin-de-siècle Paris whose names have since slipped into obscurity. Of them all, Sarah Bernhardt remains the most well known. Others include Sybil Sanderson, an American singer, who performed in popular opera. The comedian Polin appears in silhouette against artificial lighting, while the actor Coquelin Aîné is shown in the distinctive costume of the character Cyrano de Bergerac. Renowned for her beauty, the dancer Cléo de Mérode was rumoured to have had an affair with Leopold II of Belgium. SuaveLucien Guitry also courted gossip after making advances to the Tsar’s sister-in-law.
