Oscillate series blue #1is a strong expression of Martin Smith’s practice within an organised and disciplined use of materials and geometric forms, in particular the use of oblique perspective, the circle, the drum and the ubiquity of brick clay as a construction material. These structural devices stem from his interest in their use as elements in Renaissance architecture. Continuing Smith’s dedicated use of a restricted range of materials, this work consists of a cast, ground and polished unglazed terracotta vessel with its inner face platinum-leafed, and is mounted on a cut and polished blue glass disc. Its form engages the viewer with the rigour of industrial production, while its lustrous materiality reconnects us with the refined and measured world of the craftsman.
