Toni Warburton’s work deals with the experience and memory of landscape and landform. Often focusing on minute detail within a larger, sketched whole, and using the format of the sculptural landscape object seen in ancient Chinese ceramics, she invests each work with episodes of observation. In Limestone countryWarburton refers to the Jenolan Caves in New South Wales, a site associated with recollection, nostalgia and mystery. Using a mound-like form, she shows the topography of the cave location from afar, as if viewed on a postcard, exaggerating the scale of some elements, while concealing others. The work becomes a meditation on a place resonant in the mind but detached and removed from reality.
