The taut curvature and flawless seihakujipale blue celadon glaze of this blade-like porcelain form shows Sueharu Fukami’s absolute mastery over a demanding material. He casts the work, using high-pressure deposition of porcelain slip into plaster moulds, to achieve the flawlessness of surface and density of material that are central to the realisation of the fluid imagery of his minimalist forms. Fukami’s background is in the production of porcelain tablewares, but he looks further back to the earlier technological achievements of the Chinese Song Dynasty, particularly its refined, blue-glazed yingqing ceramics, as a point of reference for his work. With its precise, translucent edges Scene II cleaves the air with silent authority, energising its surrounding space with the cool presence of a wind-borne leaf or feather.
