Theme: Cities & Suburbs
Artist: Nicholas NEDELKOPOULOS Birth/Death: 1955 Title: 'That great Australian dream' Credit Line: Gordon Darling Fund 1990. National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. After the Second World War came a period of large-scale migration and the 'baby boom'. Australia was promoted as the promised land; a country of bright futures and attractive prospects. For many 'new Australians', and for those already here, living in suburbs beyond the city provided benefits that included new housing and the luxury of space. Nicholas Nedelkopoulos, the son of Greek immigrants, discerns another life behind the tidy facade - a world of claustrophobic anxiety and everyday anarchy. Nedelkopoulos is challenging Australians to observe their habitat from without and within, through the fences and backyards that contain us and our neighbours. More details Click image to enlarge |
