Theme: Beginnings Artist: Walter Burley GRIFFIN Birth/Death: 1876–1937 Title: Commonwealth of Australia Federal Capital competition: Town plan for Australia's Federal Capital, Canberra ACT: View from the summit of Mount Ainslie Credit Line: National Archives of Australia Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahoney were both architects whose work strongly reflected their spiritual beliefs. Despite not having visited the Canberra site, Griffin conceived a plan which was a creative response to the local topography, with a central lake and grand triangle bisected by the axis of Mt Ainslie and Capital Hill.
