Vase Theme: The Land

Artist: Merric BOYD
Birth/Death: 1888–1959

Title: Vase

Credit Line: National Gallery of Australia, Canberra

The pioneer studio potter, Merric Boyd, set a new direction for Australian ceramics in the 1910s. Working with clay, a material that is nature at its most elemental, he made objects that linked us to the natural environment. His robust evocations of landscape offered an alternative to the refined decoration of imported porcelains popular in Australia at the time.
