Artist: Jan MACKAY Birth/Death: 1950 Title: This woman is not a car Credit Line: Roger Butler Fund 1994 National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Jan Mackay’s poster This woman is not a car was made to accompany Margaret Dodd’s exhibition at the Watters Gallery in Sydney in 1981. Drawn from photographs and film stills, Mackay’s colour screenprint was produced at the University of Sydney’s Art Workshop, known as the Tin Sheds. Her enthusiasm for Dodd’s work was triggered by an immediate engagement with her witty style of exploring feminist issues. Dodd and MacKay use the colour pink, associated with girlish passivity, to debunk female stereotypes and ‘natural’ sensitivities. More details Click image to enlarge |
