This exhibition seeks to bring Joy Hester's remarkable contribution to Australian Art to the fore. Hester's art will be shown in relation to works by other artists who were in close contact with her in the 1940s and 1950s including Albert Tucker, Danila Vassilieff, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Gray Smith, Mirka Mora and Charles Blackman. The show will also include photographs and other documentary material to reveal her friendships with John and Sunday Reed, Barbara Blackman, Barrett Reid and others.     In this way the exhibition will place Joy Hester's work in the context of the times in which she was working, to reveal the inter-connections as well as the idiosyncrasies of her extraordinary artistic output.

Article: In this work the child appears as a foetus – as a dream waiting to be born. The emphasis is on the baby’s head, which is almost as big as the mother’s. The soft, open face, with two grey pools for eyes and the curved small body suggest the development of the foetus in the womb, slowly coming into being. It is mysterious and a bit like a tadpole. The eyes and mouth are delicately defined, not as yet distinguishing characteristics. By contrast, the mother’s facial features are dramatically revealed. Her face is divided into two planes, with a black vertical line curving along a side of the nose to the chin, recalling some of Picasso’s images of woman. Hester uses a strictly limited palette. The heavily rendered eyelids and the feeling for the dramatic suggest that this face may have been partly inspired by Mirka Mora.
