An American photographer, Ken Botto creates fantasy worlds from toys and found objects. In the photograph Deep shadows he has created an evocative atmosphere that encourages an emotional response. We become aware of the ship passengers’ fate and are reminded of stories and films such as Titanic and Jaws. Simulating reality through the use of toys gives the photograph a surreal quality. On a more ‘homely’ level, the plastic shark and wooden boat have associations with bathtub playtime and remind us of the intensity of childhood imagination.

Answer the following questions:

  • What are the advantages of constructing your own ‘worlds’ to photograph?
  • Is this preferable to photographing reality?
