Liu Xiao Xian was born in Beijing, China, in 1963. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology in 1985. Liu moved to Australia in 1990. In 1998 he completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and is currently pursuing a Master of Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. Liu has exhibited in Australia and overseas. He has had solo exhibitions during 1989, 1994, 1997 and 2001. Selected group exhibitions include About Face: Aspects of Australian portraiture c.1770-1993 at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, 1994; the MoËt & Chandon touring exhibition, 1999 and 2000; In and Out: Contemporary Chinese art from China and Australia (international travelling exhibition), 1997-2000; Centenary of Federation: the Australia projects, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Gallery, 2001; Masques, Les Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie, Arles, France, 2001; and Buddha, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2001. Liu received the Zelda Stedman Scholarship, Sydney College of the Arts in 1999-2000. He is preparing his works to be exhibited at ARCO international contemporary art fair, Madrid, 2002. Liu Xiao Xian currently lives in Sydney.
