Case Study : Qantas - the National Gallery of Australia's Airline Partner
Qantas has supported the National Gallery of Australia since we first opened our doors in 1982. Qantas is a leading advocate of the arts in Australia and has given crucial support to the NGA, sponsoring major exhibitions and providing freight.
Qantas has been an Airline, Freight and Major partner for exhibitions such as Toulouse Lautrec; Paris and the Moulin Rouge, Gold and the Incas; Lost worlds of Peru, James Turrell: A Retrospective and Tom Roberts.
Qantas is the airline of choice for the NGA's visiting international artists and dignitaries who are always thrilled with the Qantas spirit of comfort and exceptional customer service.
Qantas Freight is the NGA's trusted freight provider, carrying precious works of art all over the world. Many of the NGA's exhibitions come from world-renowned galleries and we work with Qantas to ensure that the works for these exhibitions are delivered and returned in pristine condition.Qantas is also a huge supporter of Indigenous art and culture. In 2009 their support of the NGA's first National Indigenous Art Triennial, Culture Warriors, saw the exhibition travel to major Australian state galleries before heading overseas to Washington DC where it was met with generous praise. Qantas' support opened the door for more Australians and international visitors to see this important display of Indigenous works.
Qantas is renowned for their exquisite Flying Art series of planes that are adorned with the works of Indigenous artists. As a partner, Qantas was able to work with the NGA on the fourth and latest aircraft in this series is 'Mendoowoorji' which bears an interpretation of Medicine Pocket, a 2005 artwork from late West Australian Aboriginal painter Paddy Bedford. The NGA and the Bedford Trust collaborated with Qantas to ensure the design kept the essence of the original painting which can be seen in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander galleries at the NGA.
Qantas' partnership has given them the opportunity to reward their staff and Frequent Flyer members with discounts to major ticketed events such as the blockbuster exhibition Masterpieces from Paris. Qantas has been able to host exclusive events for their stakeholders, including intimate lunches in the Boardroom of the NGA and cocktail functions with private after-hours viewings of exhibitions. The Canberra launch of the aircraft Mendoowoorji was hosted at the National Gallery and was attended by prominent business people, government representatives, and Indigenous artists and art professionals.
The NGA is incredibly proud of this partnership and look forward to continuing to work with Qantas.
