This sombre painting depends on chiaroscuro or dramatic light and dark and the almost monochromatic colour to convey intense emotion. Christ in the centre is presented with arms outstretched, drooping head and slightly twisted body. Compared to his resigned posture the two thieves are presented writhing in agony, their arms twisted around their crosses. This artist’s work during the decade 1740–1750 influenced later 18th century painting in Venice. Giambattista Tiepolo was one of his pupils.
