Neil Roberts's practice ranges across different forms of artistic expression including sculpture, studio glass, installation and performance.
His work is characterised by dramatic relationships of materials and motifs. It is visually and psychologically confronting in the spirit of the subversive Dada movement pioneered in Europe by Marcel Duchamp in the early 20th century. Untitled (Knife 2), like much of Roberts's work, combines wry humour with unsettling social critique.
Recalling the shattered glass plate of Duchamp's The large glass (1915-23), this smaller work exploits the brittle and vulnerable nature of the medium. Sharp internal fractures in the panel convey a sense of menace or impending calamity.
