The National Gallery of Australia is located in the Parliamentary Triangle on the south side of Lake Burley Griffin. It is adjacent to the High Court of Australia and The National Portrait Gallery and within walking distance of the National Library and Old Parliament House.


Introduction of paid parking

The National Gallery of Australia will introduce paid parking effective 1 October 2014.

  • Under-ground : All Visitors to the National Gallery of Australia are directed to park in the underground car park off King Edward Terrace. Height clearance is 2m.
  • Above-ground : The above ground car park off Bowen Drive is available for parking on weekends only.
  • Weekend parking is free

Hours of Operation

  • Open 7 days a week from 9.45am – 5pm
  • Charges apply until 5pm Monday to Friday.

Validate your tickets at the cloak room.

* Validated tickets expire after 3 hours.
If your stay exceeds 3 hours the full price from the time of entry will be charged. One validation per car per day.

Re-entry/Turn around rates

Re-entry to the underground car park incurs a higher charge rate.

Turnaround rates are:

Payment methods

You can pay for your parking at one of our pay stations before returning to your car. The pay station is located near the lift lobbies in the underground car park. You have the option of paying by cash or credit card.

Accessible Parking

Parking for people with limited mobility is available in both NGA car parks. Assisted lift access to the Gallery is available from the underground car park off Parkes Place with second lift closer to King Edward Terrace.


Use of public transport is recommended due to limited parking near the Gallery. The closest bus stop to the National Gallery, on the ACTION bus routes listed below, is Kings Avenue/National Circuit, only a short 5-minute walk from the Gallery. From the city, across Commonwealth Avenue, to the Gallery will take approx 30 minutes.

From the Bus Depot Markets car park (available Mon-Sat) will take 20 minutes.

Ferries are available for leisurely trips across the lake, taking 20 minutes. Ferries operate from Commonwealth Park, near Civic, to the pier in front of Commonwealth Place, a 5 minute walk from Gallery.

Lake Burley Griffin Cruises operate every day, departing from Acton ferry wharf (near Commonwealth Park) daily 10.30 am, 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm plus 11.30 am and 3.30 pm on weekends.
