Melbourne-born artist George Pitt Morison studied at the National Gallery of Victoria art school and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Later he was in charge of the art collection at the Western Australian Museum and Art Gallery from 1906–1942. This lyrical woodcut depicts a solitary tree against a sky of scudding clouds; the simplicity of its composition evoking the sense of the emptiness of the landscape
