Robert Juniper’s Drying sails 1956-57 is an early and dynamic modern work based on photographs and memories from Juniper’s travels in Western Europe in the early 1950s. Bright tonal blocks of colour, horizontal curves and truncated verticals reveal an abstracted a scene. The workers in a Spanish port are each absorbed in the process of hanging their sails to dry.
