Edmund Henderson arrived with the first convicts in 1850 as Comptroller General in charge of convicts in Western Australia, a position he held for eleven years. A talented amateur artist, Henderson painted atmospheric drawings and watercolours; not for any official purpose but simply to express his response to place. In Perth, Western Australia he transformed the scene into a magical and captivating vista filled with air and sparkling light.
