In 1696, Willem de Vlamingh landed on and named Rottnest (Rat’s nest) Island. A few days later, his party beached on mainland Australia, where he gave the broad stretch of water there the name Swartte Swaane Drift (Black Swan River). This engraving after a drawing by Jacobus van der Schley is one of the earliest visual records of Western Australia by a European artist.
