English caricature in printed form was at its most strident in the years leading up to the British settlement in New South Wales in 1788. This lithograph by Stoutshanks depicts the Duke of Wellington, who was then Prime Minister of England, astride a white swan. The British government came in for heavy criticism regarding the proposed Swan River Colony.
