Peter Prasil’s work as a designer and maker of unique furniture has two intersecting themes: the object suspended in a framework, and an ingenious use of natural and synthetic materials. Screen of drawers explores both themes, while referencing the strong influence of Scandinavian and Japanese forms, materials and construction methods on contemporary Australian furniture. It stands not only as a functional object, but also as an intriguing sculpture and object of concealment. Its clearly expressed structure is evidence of this maker’s interest in traditional joinery and the properties of native Tasmanian woods, such as Huon pine. Prasil’s use of Japanese paper is a reference to that lightweight material’s roles of light transmission and visual concealment in traditional shoji sliding doors and windows.
