‘Never since Man saw the face of the Devil have been such creations of absolute evil.’
So wrote a clergyman in 1904 in response to Norman Lindsay’s provocative image of the crucified Christ being rejected by nude pagans. Despite the controversy that raged for months, in 1907 the National Gallery of Victoria purchased the drawing for a record price.
