In May 1942 William Dobell, aged 42 and too old for active service, was drafted into the Civil Construction Corps of the Allied Works Council (AWC). During the nine months of his appointment as an AWC artist Dobell completed eight paintings, including The billy boy 1943, considered one his greatest portraits.
