Artist: George GITTOES Birth/Death: 1949 Title: Larry Smith II Credit Line: Collection of the Artist, George Gittoes ‘Modern zinc miners work alone in the dark, drilling and blasting. They do not return to the surface for the duration of their shift. The short moments in the fluorescent light of the underground crib room during smoko are their only relief from the subterranean coldness of the mine. Larry Smith is a bushman, forced to work in the mines by tough times in the rural sector. He was the miner who least wanted the attention of my portrait studies or photographs, yet I was attracted to his wary aloofness and isolation. Finally, with great difficulty, I persuaded him to pose for my studies.’ George Gittoes, c1992 More details Click image to enlarge |
