Meat queue Theme: Boom & Bust

Artist: Max DUPAIN
Birth/Death: 1911–1992

Title: Meat queue

Credit Line: Gift of the Philip Morris Arts Grant 1982 National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

Meat queue 1946 documented a necessary postwar pastime for many Australian women when certain foods were still in short supply.

Framed by the two women looking towards the camera, the three women in the centre seem to be caught in a moment of frustration and tension. The frieze like series of rounded bodies, under the rail of hooked meat suggests interesting connotations, however, Dupain is more concerned with capturing a moment of everyday interaction than in attempting any social comment.
