Sam Amato was born in New York City in 1924. He received a BFA from the Pratt Institute in New York in 1952, and held many teaching positions throughout his life.

Recognised mainly as a painter, Amato worked at Gemini Ltd in 1966 to create the work Repeat image of building, which the National Gallery holds in its collection.
