The ballet is set in the castle of the Queen of Georgia, Thamar, who entices passing suitors by fluttering her scarf out of the window. The action centres upon one particular Prince, who enters the castle and dances ecstatically with Queen Thamar. The ballet ends with the Queen murdering the Prince and then returning to the window with her scarf.

By setting this ballet in the exotic country of Georgia, Bakst and Fokine were able to base their designs and choreography on the costumes and dance steps of this central Asian region.
